Né à New Jersey le 12 juillet 1941, Richard Tuttle est un artiste original le plus doué de sa génération, RT a bousculé les conventions en peinture. Il fait ses études à la Pratt Institute of Design à Brooklyn en 1962. Deux ans plus tard, après une autre école d'art où il obtient un bachelor, il rentre à la Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture, dans l'Etat de New York.

Ce n'est qu'en 1965 qu'il émerge dans le milieu de l'art avec sa première exposition de peintures à la galerie Betty Parsons. Au début, il puise son inspiration dans l'art d'Agnès Martin, Ellsworth Kelly ou Tony Smith mais il développe très vite l'originalité qui fait de ses peintures des œuvres intemporelles et des monuments culturels. Abstraites à l'extrême, ses œuvres libèrent le matériau. La couleur, l'espace et le volume se détachent du reste. Considérant l'art comme une chose temporaire et fragile, les objets de ses peintures sont souvent placés au milieu d'une toile blanche, nue, dépouillée, montrant le minimalisme pudique d'un peintre éthéré. 2005 est son année hommage puisque le musée de San Francisco expose une rétrospective de son talent reprise ensuite par New York, Des Moines, Dallas, Chicago et Los Angeles l'année suivante.
L'Europe n'est pas en reste, puisque la France 'artiste' célèbre aussi les 40 ans de carrière du talentueux Tuttle par une rétrospective organisée au Frac de Haute-Normandie. Richard Tuttle continue son entreprise artistique entre New York, Santa Fe et le Nouveau Mexique.
